Thank you for visiting my blog!

December 5, 2011

Hi and welcome to my blog!

My name is Pia and I have lived in South Florida for what seems to be my entire life. (I lived a few years in Gainesville, too, but that’s another story.) Anyhow, as a local, I’ve also grown up with the incredible South Florida night club scene. Miami and Fort Lauderdale, in particular, have always had a dazzling array of night clubs and bars that span all styles and classes.

Since I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic lately, I thought I’d start my journey from the beginning. Back in ’82, I was 14 years old. My cousin Liz talked to me about her adventures as a late teen and her travels throughout South Florida and California. Since she lived in Los Angeles most of her life, I sort of respected her opinion, as if though she’s some higher life form and more worldly, coming from L.A. and all.  I also admired her record collection. I remember checking out her Pat Benetar and Heart albums in particular.

Music had always been something I adored that probably resulted from 3 years of classical piano training as a child and years of classical dance training. Seems awkward to see someone dance without music. Music was the foundation. At 14, I didn’t realize what was happening all around me.

My cousin would throw club names at me like Pete & Lenny’s and the Agora at me. In those days, the drinking age was 18. So, her adventures into the night club scene made the world outside my parents’ suburban home seem like the ultimate and most exciting of experiences.

I ventured forth. Live music was my craving and dance was my passion, even in ’82-83. I loved learning about bands, the followers, the music scene that developed down here. But I was still too young to go to the Pete & Lenny’s, The Agora and The Confetti’s that my cousin talked about. Yeah, she dabbled a lot in disco but had the heart of a rocker, too.

The Pete & Lenny’s, The Agora and Confetti’s were some of the coolests clubs in South Florida. What were these places about? Who went? What did people do when they got there? Yeah, it was a natural child-like curiosity that zeroed in on the most exciting places South Florida had ever known.

And since I haven’t seen anything on the web celebrating it exclusively, I wanted to make a blog just about it… the night club scene from then until now. This journey will take us through a bit of history, a bit into the shifting ways and lifestyles of South Floridians, its visitors, and their beloved night club/bar scene.

I hope you enjoy the journey.

Thanks for reading.
